The question 'Is God Calling Me?' implies more than what appears. The question being asked really is 'Is God calling me to the ministry?' That question brings about an important aspect of God. Even though God is omnipotent, He desires to use men and women to carry out His tasks on Earth. The evidence for such a statement is found in the Bible, both testaments Old and New affirm such a stance. God called men like Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos, and Habakkuk to tell others about Him and His message. In the New Testament, God called men like Peter, John, and Paul to tell the Good News of Christ's resurrection.

'Is God Calling Me?' The obvious answer could be 'yes!' God called men and women then, and He still calls men and women today. How does a person discern a call to ministry? For some people, their call to ministry is dramatic and filled with pomp and circumstance. For some examples you should think of the dramatic calls of Isaiah in the Old Testament and Paul in the New Testament. However, for most people today, their call to ministry occurred less dramatically. A call to ministry may be described as a 'desire' or a 'burden' to share the Gospel, Good News, of Jesus Christ's resurrection.

Discerning A Call to Ministry: What should I Do?

  1. Pray. This is the obvious first step in discerning a call to ministry. Actually, this should be the first step in everything you undertake whether it be discerning a call to ministry, deciding what to teach in Sunday School, or buying a new vehicle. Specifically, you should pray for God to make His calling clear.
  2. Study. The Bible contains narratives of people being called to ministry. You should read Exodus 3:1-4:17, 1 Samuel 3:1-14, Isaiah 6:1-6, Jeremiah 1:4-10, and Acts 9:1-22.
  3. Read. There are good books on the subject of discerning a call to ministry. I suggest Jeff Iorg's book Is God Calling Me? for your consideration.
  4. Seek. I've heard many people say that a minster was 'mama-called' instead of 'God-called.' While that may be true, sometimes, people may sense a call to ministry in your life before you realize that call.
